5 Best Lesbian Audiobooks in 2016

I absolutely love audiobooks. I listen to them while commuting, while resting on the couch or when trying to relax before going to sleep. There used to be very little lesbian fiction available in audio, but things are changing!

I’ve seen many lesbian books appear on Audible this last year. Finally! Here are my 5 favorite ones so far. These are audiobooks that made me blush on the bus, smile behind my desk or wiggle my eyebrows and grin while walking. Also check out my June 2016 update of this list!

1. Passion’s bright fury, by Radclyffe

Passions's bright fury When I was scrolling through my audio library and saw this title, I instantly decided: “Oh yes, Saxon Sinclair needs to be in the list!” Saxon is one of the main characters, you see, and certainly one to remember. As a secretive (read: distant and grumpy) Chief of Trauma at a busy Manhattan hospital, she is not amused when Jude Castle starts following her around to make a documentary film about the hospital.

It’s a vintage Radclyffe, following the lesbian fiction recipe effortlessly, with a great audio narration. With just under 8 hours of story, you’re happy and set for a while. There’s enough depth and excitement in this book to make it more than an amusing listen. And the sex scenes, well…better listen to those while you’re alone. You’ll blush 😉 Audio can be very intense…

Just thinking about this book, and listening to the first chapter again while writing this review, makes me want to run off to the couch and listen to the whole book again in one sitting. You can’t go wrong with this audiobook if you like lesbian romance books! For now, Passion’s bright fury is my #1!

2. Jericho, by Ann McMan

Jericho McMan gets a very close second place for several reasons. First of all, it’s a loooong listen. You get about 21 hours of very entertaining lesbian love story to enjoy. This book is great if you want to escape your busy life and dream off to a small town with a warm community.

Secondly, the Jericho audiobook made me laugh out loud several times. The narration is very lively, and makes the book extra funny. Great dialogues and a rich inner life for both characters add to the appeal. While listening, I paused several times just to tell my wife “This is such a great audiobook!”

You do have to be patient. It’s a long book and things build up slowly. If you want things to get heated fast, better check out number 1 on this list. But if you have time, and are ready to smile and enjoy a slow and romantic ride… get the Jericho audiobook

3. Snow falls, by Gerri Hill

Third place goes to this ‘stuck together’ romance story by Gerri Hill. It’s a classic concept: two women get stuck together in the middle of nowhere and things start to sizzle. This story takes place on a mountain in Aspen and is a very nice listen if you like the usual lesbian romance formula.

Jennifer Kincaid is on her way to a writing work shop when she gets lost on snowy roads, and then needs rescuing from an avalanche. She’s lucky her rescuer has a great cabin to take shelter in, since they’re now stuck together until spring. Not exactly what heroine of the day Catherine Ryan-Barret had in my mind when she retreated to her cabin for some alone time…

The narration is not particularly memorable, but it’s not bad either. The story’s entertaining, warm and very funny at times. It’s a bit short for my liking (under 6 hours), but that didn’t stop me from remembering it as soon as I started working on this list. If you’re in the mood for lots of snow and hot stuff in a cabin, listen to this book!

4. Heart Block, by Melissa Brayden

Heart block Melissa Brayden Let’s go to a warmer climate for number 4! Heart block is a heartwarming story in sunny San Diego. You get almost 10 hours of happy lesbian romance in a realistic setting. This story has believable characters with real life experiences. Something that sets Melissa Brayden somewhat apart from other authors.

One of these main characters is Mexican Sarah Matamoros who’s working long hours for her mother’s housecleaning service. She’s a refreshing and inspiring character. You’d be weird not to like her, honestly. One of Sarah’s rich and demanding clients is Emory Owen.

Emory Owen is your classical lesbian fiction character: a workaholic living a sterile life about to  be changed forever. And so the lesbian romance dance begins. This book has sust under 10 delightful hours with a great narration.  I highly recommend Heart Block if you like a bit of realism in your lesbian romance.

5. Too close to touch, by Georgia Beers

Too close to touch Last but not least, Too close to touch is another somewhat typical lesbian romance novel. Gretchen Kaiser is a workaholic corporate honcho who’s not looking for love at all. But then, of course, she meets Kylie O’brien.

Kylie is kind and looking for true love. She has a job as an administrative assistant that’s become a bit more challenging  thanks to her new, icy boss. Guess who’s the boss? You guessed right: it’s Gretchen! And so the story begins.

You get the point: it’s the usual lesbian fiction formula. But that doesn’t make this book any less entertaining and fun to listen to. The narration is OK, but not awesome. Get ready for just under 7 hours of hot office romance between the cold boss and hot assistant!
